09/06: the old is new and the new is out..
It was decided today we had one chance to get our old desk back before they are pitched. The party line was we are getting NEW and UPGRADED furniture in some nebulous future time (two weeks to four months). If any of us were unhappy with the picnic tables then certainly we should speak up now and get our old desk.
I of course said "sure I be happy with my old desk". Whoops. That was an interesting mistake. I was then handed a dolly, the key to some basement room that served probably as the asshole of my building, and told to go get it. Hmm. Mkay. I thought I wasn't allowed to life crap since I'm not union? I also thought I wasn't supposed to disassemble my computer with out pc support present? Oh those rules only apply on other cases? Wonderful.
Off I go down the service elevator having joyous amount of fun stopping in between levels and what not.
It was back UP four floors to get a screw driver - my old desk was wrapped in duct tape, and I found a moderately roomier one. The only issue is the old metal tracks for a keyboard tray. A bit of sweat and nausea (from the 100 degree humid mild-dewy-smelling room) I threw the tracks and screws across the room, and slapped this bastard desk on my dolly. Well technically I didn't - two other guys getting desks were concerned that I wouldn't be able to do it and hung around to help. They loaded it up, navigated the hallways, up the service elevator, and dropped it ten feet from my door.
How nice. Less of the labor for me.
End game is now I have a desk-desk.. my pc nestled between the wall (left), the desk(right), a foot clearance to the portable wall (back), and a UPS (uninterpretable power supply) on top of my case. Wonderful. At least I am not kicking the wall now, just the chunk of wood under my desk.
